I'm at work, so I don't have all my information, but. . . if you're
looking for advice.

The strongest rogues are the martial arts rogues because they get good
early damage, and eventually it opens up ninja skills. If you're
intrested in playing a more traditional rogue, then it's a good idea
(like you choose to do) to pick up devices or spells

I really wouldn't bother with a gadgeteering ('gadgets') rogue build,
those are . . . difficult.

Here is some advice.

Max stealth, every level. I believe when stealth is at 10, you unlock
assassination, which allows you to kill those monsters while they are
sleeping. This gives you a huge bonus to the combat against sleeping
monsters. It's another reason why martial arts is such a good combo,
because it keeps the other monsters asleep.

You might consider putting some points into theft, the extra coinage
can help you afford steamware earlier.

If you do go devices (not gadgeteering or device magic) you will
unlock Device Power Amp at rank 5 (which you can reach by level 3
IIRC). Putting points in this allows you to do extra damage with ray
guns. Carry some of the common ray guns for uniques, or anything
immune to hand to hand damage or weapon type. Power cells cannot
destory the ray guns, so if you find those in the shop it can help you
handle anything that doesn't die from assassination.

Rogues are also reasonable spell casters. Going the casting route
allows some synergies with the rogue skills, notable anatomy from
latin.

Part of the issue I believe is that you may be spreading your skill
points too thin. Let's say you decide to do martial arts and stealth.
Here is what I would do.

When creating your character get a decent social class (the only
starting stat that matters) Level 1, raise stealth to 3, raise martial
arts to 3, raise neophyte combat to 3. Buy cure light wound potions,
one scroll of etheric travel if you can afford it, and a couple phase
door scrolls, and take on safe bets in the dungeon to raise your level
to 2. Then 3.
Take as many trips as you need. Once steath is at 5, martial arts is
at 5, and neophyte combat is at 5, Dirty fighting and acrobatics will
be unlocked. Dirty fighting will directly increase your hand to hand
damage and acrobatics will increase your armor class. It also unlocks
evade (which is +speed +armor -tohit, good for early to earlymid level
uniques) and eventually at rank 20 a controlled tele****t 'spring'. Do
not raise neophyte combat past five, concentrate your skill points on
stealth, and martial arts, with a point here and there in what you
feel you are lacking.
By level 20, you should be a few points into eagle strike arts. Once
this reaches 8 you get iron skin. You've also gotten stealth to 20 by
this point unlocking superstealth. With assassination, monsters will
be dying when you hit them mostly. :-) Once eagle strike gets to 15,
with stealth at 20, dragon claw arts along with ninja stealth will
unlock.

From here on out, it's pretty easy. :-) I dunno if this will work for
you. After all I wrote the game and I still haven't beat it yet. But
this is how my rogues usually go.
