I thought about this for a while, couldn't make up my mind, so I got a
ruling
from Andrew and the result was that aggravation is *not* inverse-splendid.

I do not give a message when you wield an aggravating item.  Some day I
will
set up my learning code so that you auto-learn that items do not aggravate
when you fail to awaken visible monsters.
