You've gotten sufficiently different answers already you are probably
quite
confused.

The rule is
[(dice * melee-slay-multiplier) + bonus] for each blow
or
[(dice + bonuses) * missile-slay-multiplier] * missile-always-multiplier
for each shot
The game is about figuring out how to get the most multipliers acting on
the
biggest values as often as possible.

There is no difference, despite what you have been told. Instead, there
are
bonus shots for rangers using shortbows and longbows. Any other class
gets
the same number of shots with any missile weapon, unless it has "extra
shots".

If you are playing a ranger, your goal should be to shoot from afar. Your
melee weapon is more im****tant for any resistances it confers rather than
how
much damage it does. Your armor is im****tant for resistances, and the
armor
class does not matter much, nor do the to-hit penalties. With the same
resistances, prefer the lesser weight item ignoring AC.
You are still in the initial stage, and the above paragraph does not apply
yet, but once you start finding so-called ego items [with an 'of' in the
name]
re-read that paragraph carefully.
You may not realize it, but a ranger hits more often with the bow than
with
melee. If you face a tough opponent, shoot even when it is adjacent to
you,
although it is usually better to cast phase first and shoot from a
distance.
If you are still confused, go to rephial.org and check out Hugo's
spoilers.
