Hi Chad,
The amount shown on screen is the damage done to the creature at the
center of the explosion. Creatures in the adjacent square take half that
amount of damage, at distance two the damage is 1/3.
This continues, so at three grids distance (large balls), damage is 1/4,
and at four grids (giant balls), damage is only 1/5.
If you go to my site (see signature below) and check the spoiler files,
you'll find answers to many of the questions you asked, and many you
didn't ask yet - but do think twice before reading a spoiler, since you
only have one chance at playing the game without yet knowing exactly how
everything works...
