The number of monsters in wilderness was cut to about 1/4 of the previous
number
in about 0.2.3; this makes wilderness much more negotiable.  Plus, if you
enter
a wilderness level at night, _everything_ starts off asleep.  It can still
be
tricky, but IMO it's more balanced.
