I cleared a few demon pits which always helps to boost XP.

As Nick said, you can order consumables you have seen before at the
travelling
merchants and then they are stocked just like any other item (at higher
than
black market prices though). I bought out the merchants 3 times at the end
which
netted me the Life potions. I think I used 3 potions in the final fight.

Slow - because you have to cross the level from one side all the way to
the
other to advance, rather than taking the stairs down. However there are
wilderness vaults which contain some nice equipment.

Now in the dungeons O-based variants have stairs that have a chance of
letting
you continue down a second level. Therefore if you were that way inclined
you
can dive straight to the bottom of any of the dungeons just by repeatedly
taking
the up and down stairs and choosing to go down further when the option
arises.
Personally I think this should be replaced with NPP style shafts so if you
go
down two levels, you go back up two levels via the same staircase.

I think that was due to two things:

1) I found the gloves of magical mastery and could suddenly rely on TA to
work
most of the time (note that TA still only tele****ts one monster in FA
rather
than a line of them). 
2) I finally found some speed rings

I tend to ignore most vaults and only go for the ones I know are worth
doing for
the risk involved: Bubble vaults and GCVs in particular. I stayed in the
80s for
a while to avoid getting chased around those levels by Gothmog as tends to
happen in FA if you linger lower - very dangerous if you have dodgy
banishment
abilities.

I had my kit more or less sorted earlier on and if I'd realised I could
buy out
the merchants to get my consumables at that point I'd probably have just
gone
for it then - however it was nice to pick up the ****eld to protect my
stats.
