That's a peeve of mine.  Smeagol cannot pick it up.  No monster can pick
up
any artifact.  One wonders how they ever manage to drop an artifact they
could
not pick up in the first place.

The player can pick up even weapons of Morgul without harm so long as they
are
not wielded.  IMO monsters picking up artifacts, even with slays that
affect
them, is entirely equivalent.
