Actually, when I was last playing standard Angband on a regular basis, I
looked for stairs to 100' ASAP so I could try to get Grip or Fang as a
first level kill, when they'd still make a good experience boost. They
aren't really that tough if you know they're coming (and they tend to
break a lot of doors).
