Another factor is that moving to sell something and getting a
surprisingly high (or low) offer from the shopkeeper can be a clue as
to an object's perhaps being more useful than supposed. (With
limitations -- usefulness to characters and sale value are not that
strongly correlated in some cases.)

Consider a new player finding a potion of strength at 450'. He has an
18 STR and it's not drained. He's not sure if it's much of anything
special, but it's a new potion type and maybe he takes it to town and
the alchemist offers around four grand for it. Whoa! Perhaps it's more
useful than it seems. Keeps it perhaps until a major fight and then
uses it, and has 18/10 STR. Later notices that it's still 18/10 a
while after the fight, so it wasn't even a tem****ary boost but a
permanent increase.

P.S. For some reason, your posts show up in Google Groups as having no
author. Where it would normally say "username   view profile" it just
says "view profile". Are you doing that on purpose? If so, how? (And
if so, stop it!)
