I don't consider myself an exceptional, or otherwise "abnormal", player,
and I routinely get that deep and below - the usual limit being from
250' to around 500' - on my first trip with my presently-exclusive
mages. (Admittedly these are high-elf mages, which may make some
difference.)

Yep. All of the other things would be nice, but they will come in a not
terribly long time anyway, and comparably nice armor is not likely to be
found for quite some while.

I don't remember any noticeable breathers (aside maybe from baby
dragons, who breathe maybe one time in a few hundred and rarely do
significant damage then) for well below the depth under discussion, and
I never have trouble with packs of paladins unless they corner me where
too many of them can see me at once - which hasn't happened often.
