Most likely you've spent a bit of time in the ID?  Lawful animals can turn

tame on lawful characters there and then eventually reappear in the 
wilderness after you abandon them.  I normally let them accompany me and 
then ditch them in the barbarians or unicorn glade to get rid of them.
