Ok here's an update:

After many attempts and several characters sacc'ed by monsters, I have
level 8 a troll barbarian in Dwarftown.  He's done the carpenter
quest.  He's ID'ed most every thing he's found thanks to blessed ID
scrolls.  He's got the si, and a nice selection of gear for his
level.  I *think* he has poison, acid, and fire resistance.

Where do you think I should go next?  Do the dwarftown quests?  The
puppy cave?  Maybe jump into the ID?  Er ... go the the mountain
village?
