If your primary concern is that your piety is not going high enough in
relation to your offerings, here is some spoily and less spoily info

Generally speaking, sacrificing items is rather inefficient, unless the
said items are favored by the God for your race. Gold is somewhat
better, but you'd still be hardpressed to go above spiritually
invincible until you start obtaining considerable riches. Blessed stoma
is a good way to go higher early in the game. Live sacs work very
good, especially if you happen to find an altar in cavernous dungeon
because the critters spawn more often.
You need a significant amount of piety to go from spiritually
invincible to very close, meaning a lot of gold, a considerable stack
of stoma or quite a few live sacs.
