Had exactly the same thing happen to me last week, with a character I'd
put
an insane amount of hours into (got a troll to level 50 in ID then got 15
precrowns). It is known to be a more common occurance when giving Khelly
the amulet, though the exact cause is unknown. The only way around it is
backup saving, but personally it's not something I can ever be bothered
with. I find that crashes in ADOM are exceptionally rare (I know others
find differently) and the odd monumentous crash is something I just have
to
forgive and forget.
