I've only faced a hostile cat lord once.  It's an experience I'd rather
not 
repeat (though I did succeed).  Of the times I've gotten the ring I've
lost 
it twice.  Of course, there's not that many chars I've gotten to that
stage 
in the game, but the vast majority have been satisfyingly successful at 
getting the ring.  Playing gnomes and drakelings a lot helps - both have 
ways of dealing with cats (if you can find an instrument for the latter).
