Humans aren't that great in ADOM actually, because they're so average. 
They 
have no special advantages like the other races all do.  I'd encourage you

to play about a bit and get a feel for what you like best (personally I 
prefer gnomes and drakelings, for various reasons).  Generally wizards are

considered better than elementalists, since they find a lot of spellbooks 
around and can gain a huge magical arsenal.  Elementalists are a bit more 
restricted, but can be easier to use for a new player since they'll almost

never run out of offensive magic in the early game.
