>KL(B Directions counter-clockwise in Mah-Jong, the question is
why?
Here may be a clue to an answer. I quote from page xx, The Living I-
Ching (2006) by Deng Ming Dao.
In $B!H(BThe Early Heaven Eight Trigram: This is FU Xi$B!G(Bs
arrangement of the
Eight Trigrams. The arrangement is read counter-clockwise. Opposite
trigrams are arranged across from one another.$B!I(B
Heaven and Earth: Lake and Mountain, Fire and Water, Thunder and Wind
are the 4 opposing pairs of trigrams.
Early Heaven Eight Trigram is the original version of Bagua (8-
trigrams).
Hypothetically in the concentric circles of the tong ($BE{(B) symbol in
Mah-
Jong, the blank or black center area is Wuji. $B!H(BIt represents the
great
limitlessness that is our origin.$B!I(B
The first circle represents yin and yang. $B!H(BYin and yang are the
first
separation from limitlessness$B!I(B.
The second circle represents the Four Images. $B!H(BYin and yang take on
their first pairings with one another, forming four combinations.$B!I(B
Third circle represents the Early Heaven Eight Trigram. As stated in
the beginning, this arrangement of FU Xi is read counter clockwise and
the trigrams are in polar opposite, Heaven and Earth, Lake and
Mountain, Fire and Water, Thunder and Wind.
Note: The very first Bagua was read counter clockwise. Mah-Jong
direction of rotation is also counter clockwise.
Mah-Jong has a pair like I-Ching$B!G(Bs yin and yang; and sub-sets of
3$B!G(Bs
like I-Ching trigrams.
Here is a question. The counter clockwise rotation and unique
configuration of (2.3.3.3.3) happened by accident or by design?
By the way, the Later Eight Trigram of King Wen reads clockwise. Is
that not another clue for a possibility that Mah-jong design took
place before King Wen$B!G(Bs change to the arrangement of trigrams? And
when would that be, long before the mid 19th century?
+++++++++++
