This is a quote, from Sloperama FAQ, repeated here.
"Friends when playing this game would each draw a Poetry piece and
then complete the phrase by making a short poem right on the spot for
"fun".
=B4=BA=CF=C4=C7=EF=B6=AC, =96|=C4=CF=CE=F7=B1=B1, =D6=D0=B7=A2=B0=D7
Each of the 11 words plus 4 FLOWERS can make many poetic phrases.
To me there might be a kin****p between Poetry pai and mahjong.
Can anyone comment or add anything here?

A second part of that quote:
"Later on again, "Poetry Pai" was used for playing a tricks game
(eg Bridge) among the intelligent/literate. I have absolutely no idea
how this works (no explanation anywhere)."

John, you said "e.g. Bridge" . How sure are you on that. What did you
mean by "a tricks game"? Could it have been possibly trick-forming and
NOT trick-taking?
Bridge is a trick-taking game. Mahjong maybe said is a trick-MAKING
game.
TAKING or MAKING, that's the question.
Where can one search further into the question? I believe that TRAIL
is of critical im****tance in the history of mahjong.
