Well, cutbacks always are a bees-itch, but when you are highly skilled and

given even a slight increase in pay, when some bean counter comes along to

cut costs you are always the first one to be fired, especially if you are
working slightly less than 10 years and due long service leave.

>OK, so he's jobless. Separated on good terms, but still.

No doubt you were given 15 minutes to empty your locker and left the
building escorted by security, rather than being fired by email while you
are in hospital after being injured in the line of duty.....

>But, still. Why would he become a shadowrunner? (I know, maybe it
>means I should go with another character concept, but...Eh, I dunno.
>Something in me feels stubborn.)

Most of the Star characters in the books retained some sort of sense of
justice (modified for survival of course), most would choose periphery
positions in the shadows as a freelance "thief-taker" or private
investigator, unless they uncovered some stereotypical Awful Secret (TM)
about the cor****ation.

>Why would *anybody* become a shadowrunner, actually?

Well, certainly not for the medical benefits or retirement package, but
sometimes you take dangerous work to survive from day to day. Those who
do
it for the thrills have an even shorter life expectancy.

While there are those who spend up big or who do not want to plow the
money
back into cyberware or hardware - but if I had a million nuyen in "real
life", I would purchase a permanent middle or high lifestyle and not
bother
to go on shadowruns.
