Wrong question. You should ask:

Why would any Johnson hire a former beat cop and SWAT man as runner?

"Because he can shoot people real good" is not enough. For that, you get 
samaurais and former soldiers by the dozen.

Only one reason: Make a living.
Some people may do it for the "thrill", but this people will usually be 
victim of Darwins law.
Allmost all Johnsons work for a corp, the few others for some branch of 
the gouvernment. Policlubs and/or magical groups comes third, and once 
in a blue moon you stumble over some rich and desperate individual that 
need "intrepid specialist for a discrete mission".
But all this Johnsons prefer to hire professionell specialists, not some 
crackpot who work for the adrenalin or the good cause.
