Cyberpunk v3 - analysis

by "Grebo" <greboguru@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Apr 28, 2006 at 08:26 AM

Well... I bought it Cyberpunk v3. And I read it, cover to cover. The
experience was so painful, it took me two months to do so.

Pick it up. Read a few pages. Put it down. Shudder. Wait a few days.
Repeat.

I'm not here to dump on a game I never liked or anything. Quite the
opposite. I LOVE Cyberpunk and Cyberpunk 2020. I've played 2020 more
than any other RPG in my life. I waited, eagerly, for Cyberpunk v3 for
years. I waited all of this century, and more. Heck, I waited all of
this Millennium. I wanted this book to be good. Or at least decent.

But it's not.

There is, in fact, almost nothing good about this new book.

Cyberpunk v3's concept and setting are baffling, arbitrary,
unbelievable and downright unappealing. Its writing wobbles from
illogical to tired to preposterous. Its approach eschews
chracter-driven roleplaying for mindless and endless gun battles. Its
system mechanics are internally inconsistent, unclear, and
self-contradictory, and generally broken. Its editing is atrocious. Its
"artwork" is inapporpriate and, worse yet, useless. Its color scheme is
unpleasant. Even its typography is often nigh-illegible.

Not only is Cyberpunk v3 not a good sequel to Cyberpunk... Cyberpunk v3
isn't cyberpunk at all. It's not about the relationship between man and
machine in the near future. It's about transhumanism in a far-future,
post-holocaust world.

Cyberpunk v3 is, to my eyes, a farce. Or flaming wreckage. What a
strange, sad disappointment.

I have a lot more to say... but what are your thoughts?

Grebo
