I wonder whether the difference between immersive, actor and author
stances in play are relevant here too.  I can accept having immersive
"fun" as an evil character being disturbing, but enjoying playing an
evil character in author or actor stance is a quite different
prospect.  Could this have something to do with why you feel GMs can
play evil characters safely while players can't?

Sadly I have never seen an episode of Serial Killer so can't use that
as a reference.  I don't know if it's even been shown here in NZ.
