Actually, Doom has weaknesses.  There's a bunch of engine and design
limits that tend to produce a maximum map size (see information about
the map lumps - indexes are only 16-bit values providing a hardcoded
limit of 65535).  

There are some source ****ts that fix the old limits, but they only
appeared when Quake 2 was released.  Even then, the source ****ts can't
really work around a hard coded limit without breaking compatability
in some manner (e.g. map editors need to be rewritten to sup****t the
new map style).
