Much cooler name than "****kalator".
One of my never-got-off-the-ground projects was going to have Heretic and
Hexen farm animals on it.:)
Speaking of which, since that's gone nowhere, might as well explain how it
worked:
The player character wasn't the hero, he was the villain. In the forest
outside a medieval-era town, he finds a pool haunted by a dark spirit. The
spirit offers him power in exchange for "souls" - fresh kills.
The trick was to lure townspeople back to the pool and kill them in such a
way
that their corpses fell into it. There would be three levels, and each one
ended after a predetermined kill level. The first level people wouldn't
attack, they'd just follow the player merrily without threat until he
attacked
them by the pool. On the second level, they'd still be friendly to the
player,
but, suspecting something, would attack the spirit when they arrived at
the
pool. (Damage to the spirit was reflected into the player via a voodoo
doll
hidden below the spirit. Death of the spirit meant death of the doll and
player.) Third level was an all-out firefight between the townspeople and
the
player, where he had to balance killing threats Doom style with leading
the
attackers back to the pool for more souls.
Once dead, people spawned a number (depending on how well-armed they were
in
life) of invisible objects. If in the pool when they died, these objects
would
be whisked (by conveyor - this was in the MBF engine) off-map into a pit
of
friendly monsters - modified Hanging Keens, whose attack killed the soul
object and then dropped to their death frame. Last keen dies, exit door
opens.
Thus, I could control approximately the number of "souls" required. Also,
a
conveyor that only moved when a keen died (MBF codepointer trick) would
carry
powerups to a tele****ter, tele****ting new supplies in with each kill, as a
"reward" for feeding the spirit fresh kills.
