Zdoom, windows xp, slow level change/restart

Tried zdoom, like it. Only one problem, it takes way to long to change
levels or
restore the game. No disc access, just literally seems to take a nap for
one to 5 (!)
minutes. Not a slow computer, a Althalon 2.0 gig+ with 512 meg of memory.
Game play other than this is quite snappy. Don't understand it.
