Great to read you've invested some time to the cause.
Let me tip you further; Since you own an ATI card.
Now check a few threads on tips already.

Let me save you some time..

#1:
Nomatter your quality and resolution choice;
Make sure that the TripleBuffering is enabled in the OpenGL
compatibility section of the Catalyst drivers.
Then Turn Vsynch-OFF in doom settings.

#2:
If you find it too dark and Brightness makes things a bit too
pale and lifeless; Open a console CTRL ALT #
and set the gamma higher than 1.
r_gamma 1.4        For a starter.

#3 Humus hotfix for ATI radeon renderer.. (Although your vid
card might not get much better framerate from it; You can try,
it won't harm.

It's some sort of hotfix for the pixel shader to be ATI radeon friendly.
It does some float operations better, improves speed as well as
framerate. It also fixes specular glitches (pixies along some axis).
The speed gain to be expected is around 18%.. (Not on all ATI hardware)
Just unzip in your doom folder and it'll create a glprog within the base
folder with the now famous interaction.vfp by Humus, now working
for ATI... So this is not gonna break anything.
