I'm still in favour of bidding, but playing something like Lebensohl
here is a way to alleviate bad judgment and avoid bad luck.

Simple agreements like "After a takeout double at the 2-level, 2NT is
always Lebensohl," or even just "Responder's 2NT is NEVER natural," are
IMHO easier on the brain *and* work better than playing natural 2NT bids
or working it out for each situation.

Playing with any of my favourite partners, Lebensohl would be on and
bidding obligatory.  Doesn't help with your problem at the table of
course.
