You hold AKQx AJTx x Qxxx
Your Bid?
Partner showed 5 spades and the 3 Heart bid was preemptive.

Hopefully, I've corrected the hand correctly.
Unfortunately, anything you do here is a guess, because you misbid
your hand on the previous round.
Instead of bidding 4s, which could after all have been bid with
AKxx
x
xx
KQJxxx
i.e., a distributional raise to 4s, this hand should have bid 4h =3D
power raise to 4s. That would both be a more accurate description of
your hand and invite partner's assistance should they bid to 5h.
Whether you or responder would have made the right call in that
situation is uncertain, but you have a much better chance of doing it
right after the qbid than after an undescriptive raise to 4s.
Note that the effect of this is that hands that have slam interest in
diamonds, or even in diamonds and clubs - perhaps hands like
Kxx
x
AKQJxxx
Ax
where the AQxxx of spades might be enough for slam, or
Kx
x
AKxxx
AQJxx
Where the AS and the Kxxx of clubs might be enougn for slam -
can't be shown via a qbid. In these situations, opener is forced to
show strength by jumping to 5d with the first hand or 5c with the
second. That compromises your ability to play in 3nt, of course.
I'll take the push to 5s. I'm far from certain I can get them down 3
(with equal vulnerability) or down 4 (at unfavorable) and I think
there is no chance that 4s is going down, so I'm going to hope the par
result is 4s making 5. That will get me average on the board, at
lesat.
