The more relevant question might be: If a player miscounts the trump
suit and revokes, should we penalize him because his bad bridge got
his opponents a bad score?  Yes, and we do (or at least we restore
equity).  We do it because a revoke is not within the realm of errors
that are considered part of the normal game.  So far, the Laws hold
(by omission) that not knowing one's bidding agreements is within that
normal realm, but the Laws have changed only incrementally from the
days when there were no conventions (so it was for many years at the
****tland Club, at least according to legend), and maybe it is time for
a rethink.
