Assuming that the 2h bid shows 3 spades plus values, I think longingly
of bidding 4h.
(1) There is no hand too weak to bid 2h immediately that is strong
enough to bid 3h now, in the face of a heart misfit. That is, if
responder didn't want to bid 2h right away with
x
AQxxxx
xxx
xxx
what business does he have bidding 3h now, in front of opener, who
could have
KQx
x
KJxxxx
Axx
(2) The only hand with 5+ hearts that can afford to bid 3h now is one
that is willing to offer a second place to play if opener misfits
hearts. I think that suit is clubs, since if doubler had hearts and
diamonds, in a hand like
xx
AKxxx
QTxx
xx
he could bid 2h and then 3d instead of doubling and then bidding 3h.
(3) If partner does have hearts and clubs and likely short spades (I
do have 3 and they have bid and raised spades), then 4h could be
opposite as little as
x
AQxxx
xx
Kxxxx
if hearts break 3-2 and diamonds break 3-3. That's not a great game
but its a possible one.
Since the singleton spade in doubler's hand is not guaranteed (how
funny would it be if overcaller had AKxx and advancer bid 2h with QJx
if we got to 4h?) and since the small additions that would greatly
improve the odds on game (AQJxx hearts instead of AQxxx; Axxxx of
clubs instead of Kxxxx) would constitute an opening bid for me, I will
finally pass, unhappy in the fear that I might be missing a fair game.
