Bidding 4D instead of 4H was the alternative Eric, but I suspect my
partner would have expected more, another alternative is bidding
directly 4H, after his 2S! invitation, but that does not give any
clues to my partner on whether I am bidding on general strength
combined with the unknown singleton for a likely game or just
gambling. By asking first and than bidding game my partner knows we
have fitting hands and I am bidding game on the knowledge of him
holding that singleton or void. Besides if he is strong as in the
example you were showing he won't certainly stop in game.
Cheers
