But not to get to them.
Declarer needs four entries to dummy to ruff spades twice, to lead a
trump, and to cash the spades. There are potentially exactly enough
entries: two ruffs and two aces. But the spade ace is only an entry if
you lead to it so unless the defense cooperates one of the entries
will be wasted. For example: 3 diamond leads then a trump from dummy.
Defense wins and plays a club. That's your second entry to dummy but
you can't use it productively. You must now either lead a trump from
dummy (a wasteful use of the club ace entry), or cash the spade ace
(which wastes the entry value of that card).
I give you credit for checking. I tend to assume automatically that
Dave's analyses are right, but obviously that's my mental laziness.
