The same principal applies in any natural bidding, but it doesn't
refer to opening the bidding but rather to responding to an opening
bid at the one-level.

Partner opens 1C or 1D, and you hold four hearts and four spades. Bid
1H first, which allows partner to show his spade suit at the one
level. If he doesn't' do so, he probably doesn't have it (though many
will agree to conceal opener's second suit tem****arily, if playing new
minor forcing or checkback stayman, over a 1NT rebid.)

But holding five spades and five hearts, respond one1S to partner's 1C
or 1D opening. The reason: when you next bid 2H, partner will know
that you hold five or more spades along with four or more hearts.
Bidding the other way (see preceding p;aragraph) shows that you hold
four spades only (though you might bid the same as in the previous
para. with five hearts and four spades.)
