It's a regional! Have you ever gone to a regional tournament fully
expecting not to place once in 10 sessions? I think that that was
probably
true of my first. Now, I have had a tournament or two where I only managed
what you call "attendance points", but for the most part I have a
realistic
expectation of placing in the top three pairs in my section - and if you
don't, you'd be a pretty unusual competitor. Most people don't go in for
competition if they know they're never going to win.
