Thanks again to all who responded, and now the full story.

I held this hand (I may not have had the QS, I don't remember, but the
shape is right):

Q
xxx
xxxxx
AKxx

for my 3c bid. Somewhat unexpectedly, my LHO doubled me with

Axxx
x
x
JTxxxxx

with perhaps a red K or Q also.

Of course, I did not let the hand play in 3cx, so I ran to 3h and the
auction took its course.

After the hand, I asked my partner whether he knew I had heart
sup****t.

He said that the 3c bid could have been natural without heart sup****t
(he did hold the singleton queen for his pass).

I said that there is no hand I could have that was not able to bid 3c
before that could bid 3c now unless it had heart sup****t as well.

He said, what about Jack ninth in a crappy hand?

I repeated that if I considered 3c unsafe / unwise / un-whatever over
1d, then how could it now be safer / wiser / whatever-er when the
opponents have announced strength and a fit and my LHO was unlimited.

He thought that I had entirely lost my mind ('you're missing the
point, totally'), so this was for me a reality check. I was pretty
sure I was right and am now pretty confident in that *****sment.

Whether bidding 3c as a lead director on AKxx is wise or not is
certainly up for debate.

But whether, having bid 3c, I must have heart sup****t on this auction
seemed (and seems) clearly right.
