If you think that your opponents have the understanding that asking about
a

opening calls for a club lead, then you presumably also suspect an
understanding regarding the absence of such questions.

Therefore you must either always call the director after bidding
1C or never. Otherwise your partner might draw conclusions regarding
your concern about the opening lead, and thus about your hand.

Obviously, the director won't be able to help you, but that isn't a
sufficient reason not to call him.
