I do not know anything about a "karpin" count, but here is the KS
count from their 1958 book "How to play Winning Bridge" as it applies
to major suit opening bids:
KQTxx KQx Qxx xx: 12 HCPs and 2 QT
AKJxx x xxx QJxx: 11 HCPs and 1 point for the singleton = 12 points
AKxxxxx QTx xx x: 9 HCPs plus 2 points for the 7 card suit and 1
point for the singleton = 12 points
AQTxx AJxx xx xx; no extra points for distribution, but 11 hcps and
2.5 QTs
KJTxxx AJTx Jxx VOID: 1.5 QTs, 10 HCPs, 2 points for the void, 1 for
the 6 card suit. "the TS and TH would induce us to open:
QJxxx Kxx KQx Jx: Pass, 12 HCPs, nothing for distribution, 1.5 QTs
xxxxx Kxx KQx Ax: rarity (weak 1nt with a 5M).
Their summary; "(1) a hand with 2.5 quick tricks or more is opened
with 11 points and 92) no hand with less than 2 quick tricks is much
of an opening bid, but a hand with 1.5 quick tricks may be opened if
you have 13 points" (NOTE: they count 1 for a 6-bagger or a
doubleton, 2 for a 7+ bagger or a void for their distributiona count).
