Two things:
1. I read this before posting my last answer.
2. Give people a little more time, eh, Henry? Knowing the hands
creates biases.

Feh. Competition is based on shape. You pass with shortagish (as
here), and you double with a third or more heart.

Nope. Pass. Sit a double.

Yes.

Cry. But surely not double - double ends the auction where partner is
short in hearts. (I'd bid 4N for the minors.)

No, because the double is penaltyish on both sides (and the 2C bidder
is going to honor it unless he has an ultra monster that makes six
opposite random nothing in the right strain.)

Double shows more hearts than pass. This hand doubles 4H. I bid 4N
with the above hand, and I'm still right. (yeah, we'll have to move
some cards for the hands to match, but you get the idea.)

Double doesn't always end the auction. You can't wait until you have
four solid hearts to double.

Indeed. But if you ended up in 4S, it would be your own fault.
My auction with your hands and your response structure to 2C:

2C-P-2D-4H
P-P-4N-P
5N-P-7C-AP
Yes, 7N is better. I wouldn't find it. (5H would be OK instead of 5N.
After 2C-P-2D-4H/X-P-4N-P, I believe Henry and both think 5H will lead
to a non-making contract.)
