Not as useless as you may think.
1N - 2D
2H - 4H (is a mild slam invite sequence)
while
1N - 4D
4H ( for a sign-off)
Same goes after 2N while 4C is 'Gerber' that one can normally use when
holding a one-suiter.
The 4C bid that you are mentioning is called the 'African Transfer' if
I am not mistaken.
