Would not 4d = Texas transfer to hearts in "ordinary methods"?  At the
very least, I would assume that 4d is not natural if it were to come
up in an undiscussed auction, just as I would assume that 1nt-2s was
not natural.

I don't think I know anybody in Australia who plays 4D as a transfer to 
hearts. But I do know a lot of people who play 4C as a transfer to hearts,

especially opposite 1NT openings.

Normal here is 4C and 4D as natural opposite 2NT. It's hard to imagine a 
more useless bid than an uncertain but probably conventional 4D bid.
