I am fairly confident there's an edge to playing 5D rather than 3NT
(even at matchpoints). Slam is obviously possible -- 20-30%? There are
a lot of ways it can fail.

The choices, then, are to bid 5D directly or to use our methods and go
a little slower. A natural possibility is 4D direct which oddly does
not sound like diamonds. If we are playing 3S transfers to 3NT and 4D
is then diamonds, I'd do that then cue bid if partner bids 4H. As for
what to cue bid I think I'm stuck with 4S. If that brings 5D from
partner I'm done.
