Not having an agreement would be contrary to the rules of, at least, the
ACBL.

Pickup partner or otherwise.  I've played in BBO Individual tournaments
where you get approximately two seconds to agree on a convention card.  We
manage.  As a top-rated director, you should know better.  We have a
monthly individual at one of our local clubs and system discussion tends
to
be "do you play transfers?", but there's a default "Standard American" if
nothing else is discussed.

Not if you've agreed on a basic system - and you should have done.
