I don't think anyone called him that back then.
No telling what they called me. I was in disastersville.
BTW, was the Mahorner who got 14% of the vote in a headsup primary our
mahorner?
Is Oneupsman****p and the like still his bible for life? (Besides Bridge
Squeezes Complete, and Goren?)
Innyhoo, we were the slow pair, me because I was in such a (non-drug) fog
I
had to recreate the play almost every time it was my turn, and because of
Jim's oneupsman****p. His huddles were not because he didn't know what the
right play was, but because he had to figure out what his unassailable
defense would be. If there was none, he'd choose the inferior play that he
could justify.
Hmmm. Very shortly after I began playing Jim told an old friend that if he
played with me in the sectional a town or two away that he'd guarantee
second place. Behind him and Judy, of course. Earl and I won the platter.
There were two things involved.
One, when Jim saw me at my first game he approached me and said he'd like
to
play IF I learned book Goren completely.
Two, for some unfathomable reason what with no acquaintances where I lived
then and with no relatives who ever even said the word 'bridge', I began
collecting Goren columns when I was in the seventh grade, and later kept
scrapbooks of them in the john/reading room. I had them when Jim suggested
playing.
Jim's reasoning behind the offer to play, btw, was strictly oneupsman****p
and gamesman****p. If I play with that headcase and lose they will say
what
can you expect, and if I win they will say wow what a great player Jim
Mahorner is.

Hugh Smith?
For some reason I relate the name to the AF Captain who first took me to
the
Rose Room for my first game.
I sure do know the name, however.

Don;t need to. used to see his name on TV as much as in Bridge World.

Mel. Mel? Been many decades.

You never met the Colonel, did you?
Ask Mahorner for stories about him. They are (were?) legendary.
Magnificent, but a magnificent and great Ted Knight.
And what stories I could tell about mahorner! (Keep that in mind, Jim!)

ok, interesting although I am not yet on OKB or BBO yet. Hell, haven't
played in a long long time, and partners long long gone.
I could not adequately tell you how much I enjoyed your post, minus.
Thanks!
