I doubt it is a new system. Something like that was played by most of
the whiz kids (Blum - Freeman - and the other 4) in the sixties while
they were in Atlanta at GT or just out. I have played it and have a 251
1/2 score (156 average) with it in a really tough mens pair (an event
long gone) that included 2 world champions. I have also had a 117 vs a
bunch of lol* using the same system. It is fun to play but the lol* get
upset when you play it and the ACBL always protects the lol*. Light
initial actions have been popular for a long time - the suicide
pre-empts are difficult to play against if you have not prepared for it.
A simple convention will take care of those (Fishbien)
Europe is much more tolerant for conventions and systems than the US and
as a results have advanced bidding theory well past the US. I used to
play a modified canape' that all bids showed 4 or more in that suit
except the 1 club opener. Because a name player made a mistake and got
a bad result and raised hell with the directors - they disallowed our
approach in the middle of the 1st round of 2nd day of the blue ribbon
pairs. With the aid of Allan Truscott (who was the bridge writer for
the New York Times) we were allowed to resume play for the final day.
We didnt play well in the finals but we had also lost most of our lead
and probably not recovered from the system battle. The battle of
conventions is a never ending war and is part of the reason I no longer
compete in bridge. I served about 10 years on the district board and
the stupidity of the league management and even the national BOD always
made me wonder how the ACBL survived. It is almost dead and it is a
deserved end.
