You cite 'modified Lionel' but not 'Lionel'.
Searches here and on the Web reveal several versions

LIONEL

from the www.australianbridge.com survey
Dbl = 11+ HCP with at least 4-4 in spades and an other.
2C, 2D = 11+ HCP with at least 4-4 in hearts and the bid minor.
2H =11+ HCP with at least 4-4 in the majors, 2S = natural.

This seems fairly ubiquitous

also from Bridgebase.com  (I find this one dubious)
X = Spades and another suit
2C = Clubs
2D = Diamonds
2H = Hearts
2S = Spades

and I've seen (but cannot find again)
X = Spades and another suit, or 16+ points
2C = Clubs
2D = Diamonds
2H = Hearts
2S = Spades

and even more rarely
X = Spades and another suit
2C = Clubs and hearts
2D = Diamonds and hearts
2H = Both majors
2S = Spades

and fancy playing
X = Spades and another suit
2C = Clubs a red suit
2D = majors
2H = natural
2S = Spades

Anyone know the what is 'original' Lionel?  The characteristic of the 
method group seems to be that double shows 11+ with four spades.

Indeed this would even seem legal under UK's "at least 12 HCP or 
compensating distribution" regulation - with possession of the key spade 
suit and some shape compensating for that missing jack.
