When you see the "50" bonus appear (accompanied by a sound effect)
then you have acquired the letter. If you then go back to home, you'll
see
the letter being lit in the "JAMES POND" sign above your house.

Like said above, a sound effect and the "50" bonus confirm that
you have acquired that letter. The sound effect is especially useful -
if you storm through the room full of enemies you don't have time
to look at that "50" text :)
