Basicly, you just have to make physical contact - ie bumb into them  :)

Note that the good fishes are noticeably slower that the main 
character (especially  if you have eaten those speed inducing powerups) 
and sometimes have trouble going around obstacles. You should guide 
the fish slowly into the safety and give it some time to catch up with 
you.
