That's a very perceptive thought - and you are right, sometimes he can.
But it doesn't do him all that much good.
Probably the first thing is to understand those lines on the Resources
map. They represent the routes that all supplies will travel along. I'm
going to quote a couple of bits from the manual here:
"RESOURCE NETWORK
Clicking on the RESOURCES icon puts you in Resource Network mode. The
main map screen will show the network that determines the speed at which
raw materials are ****pped (FROM RESOURCE ISLANDS) to Factory islands,
where weaponry and other equipment are constructed, and then ****pped to
the Stockpile island via a fleet of submersible cargo drones. The larger
and more comprehensive the network, the more efficient the production and
****pping of resources."
(Sorry, I added that text in capitalsas I thought it made it clearer.)
So if the Omega jumps past a "network bottleneck", and captures an island,
its not good for you, but neither is it great for him. The island is not
connected to his network and in order to refuel he'll need to travel back
to his network. He will need to actually capture the bottleneck, to bring
his network through it, and extend it to the island beyond - just as you
must try to do with his islands. Does that make sense?

Remember,
"As you take control of a number of islands your network will spread
across
the map, and solid lines the colour of your forces will show the network
links between each island. Owing to volcanic ridges and other geological
features, the network can only maintain itself between certain islands, so
if you take control of two islands close to each other, the network may
not link them directly together. However, the network will show all links
between islands captured by your forces and any other islands that it is
possible to link up to by depicting them in the same colour as neutral
islands"

No. The Stockpile Island is where the fuel/equipment is, so that's where
_you_ have to be. You change your stockpile island as you go, so actually
you may find that you have plenty of things to keep you busy when
travelling between islands.
When you need to actually resupply/refuel:
"To transfer the supplies, the Carrier must be in range of the Stockpile
Island. If it is not in range, or if the Carrier's communications are
damaged or at fault, you will not be able to access the Transfer screens.
Click on the left and right arrows to move supplies from the Stockpile
Island to the Transfer Drone--You will be informed if you exceed the
Carrier's Stores limit or the Transfer Drone's maximum cargo quota."
Also - Vulcan is your Base island (and initially, your Stockpile island).
If you lose your Vulcan, the whole network freezes. That's quite a biggie.

Yeah, yeah.... well hopefully you prefer the damage control in this game

That's why I use the mouse, for everything. I find it works really well.

He moves with frightening speed, it can be quite stressful watching those
