Okay with that in mind, here's my bluffer's guide to getting started in
Gravity. I'm not saying its the definitive method, but it does seem to
offer some immediate progress to the point where you are actually getting
into serious fisticuffs with Outie fleets - and if you go purely by the
manual, getting to this point can be quite confusing.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this, a bit of feedback, criticism is fine
- and ideally even a bit of collabaration. :)

Okay, here we go.

1. Establish you first Colony.

Immediately after you start the game you see some text come up on screen
giving you an order direct from StarCom to colonise a system. It
disappears after a second or two, but don't worry if you didn't read every
word, the navigational details will be handled by your computer, unless
you choose to go your own way

Right, time to build a colony. When you've done this once, it is really
very simple. Okay, double-click the Tools (spanner) icon to bring up the
Tools screen. You'll see the 3 launch tubes, and up in the top right
corner of the box is an "I" for Inventory. Click on the "I" and it will
display a small window showing your stock of the 4 types of Tools you
have. We're only interested in the first one, the big grey Colony module,
so drag and drop one of those into the window on top of the first launch
tube, can you see it there now? Good.

Right, knocking about somewhere on most screens (usually towards the top
left of what you're looking at) you'll see a little copper coloured Close
Screen gadget, click on that and then click on the third icon from the
left at the bottom of the screen, the Grid. Or you can just click on this
immediately to go directly to the Grid where you take direct control of
your ****p.

To do this, lose the pointer by tapping the Help key, this will enable
direct mouse control of your ****p - or use the keyboard controls if you
prefer.

Now, you need to go to the system that your orders mentioned and create
that Colony. Your navigational systems will have already targetted the
correct location (unless you have overidden it on the map) so now you need
to enter the local black hole to make the jump.

You'll soon find the black hole if you go sight-seeing, but the quickest
way is to look on your long-range scanner, the square window on the top
left of the screen, locate the dark blue line, and follow it. It is locked
on to the black hole.

Enter the black hole and marvel at the faster than light special effects!
Okay, you should now be in the target system where you are supposed to
establish that colony. You are looking for a suitable planet, so this time
have a look for a Green line on your scanner. Now, you actually want a
Terran planet, a volcanic rock isn't going to do, so think clouds and
oceans. When you find a suitable world, drift in nice and close and tap
the "T" key once to eject the Colony module. You'll see a little flight of
purple colony ****ps landing on the planet and you will get confirmation
and fresh orders from StarCom if all has gone well.

2. Establish more Colonies!

The next couple of missions will almost certainly be further Colony
orders, but from hear on in you are very likely to encounter opposition
and you can expect to suffer losses. If your current ****p is destroyed
your flag is transferred to one of the others (there are 16 in total) and
you continue from there. You can of course transfer your Flag at any time
by using the map and clicking on the desired ****p.

3. A word on Combat.

When you enter a system where you suspect there are enemy ****ps, if you
simply want to get the job done, rather than embark on a lust for glory
trail, launch your Drones with the "D" key, then undertake your mission,
staying out of the way where possible. On leaving the system don't forget
to recall your faithful friends with the "R" key. When you are in combat,
one option is to allow yourself to drift away from the enemy while they
chase you. You can then turn, without losing any momentum, and blast those
Outie s***. A very useful tactic is to keep watching your scanner and
blast away at the enemy before they actually appear on the screen. Large
numbers of ****ps can be destroyed in this way, often without your own
vessel taking any damage. And don't forget your ****p carries a large stock
of missiles.

Bear in mind that everytime you hit another ****p (theirs or yours) you
gain cash. This will enable you to buy better kit at colony bases, and in
turn destroy even more ****ps.

                  All the best,
                        Angus Manwaring. (for e-mail remove
