Games for a 9 year old?

My son has recently developed an appetite to play some games as most
boys do at that age. He did play Quake and Heroes 2 for a while but he
decided he didn't like them. What games do you recommend?

I'd rather he wouldn't play very violent games, which probably narrows
it down although he has grown rather fond to some puzzle games on
other platforms.
